Support for multiple APKs helps Android app developers

This is great news for Android app developers because it will allow them to deliver apps on a wide range of company devices. This new change is one of Google's key efforts to address the problems retail has encountered. Several versions of the same app can now be integrated into the Android Market menu. The previous rule allowed only one APK per product list. The advantage of uploading multiple versions of an APK is that each version can handle a different set of customers. Different versions share the same package name, but they contain markup indicating different versions available on Android, different screen sizes and GL texture compression formats. The correct APK is delivered to the customer, depending on the signatures and features of the user's device.

Initial reports of this new discovery of market devices appeared last month in the web version of Google Market for Android. Users simply go to the web browser and sign in, then select the app they want to install. This system then verifies the compatibility of the selected application and the devices specified in the user settings. Supported apps will receive a green message saying "This app is compatible with your device" or a yellow message saying "This app is not compatible with your device".

Now Android app developers will have the ability to provide additional compatible versions in the same offer, rather than saturating the market with multiple lists that ultimately confuse the user. Compatibility with multiple APKs will give the developer more options to control the distribution of their apps. In particular, the developer can create a separate APK for smartphones and tablets in this same list. Taking advantage of new API or hardware capabilities without significantly impacting the customer base should be an important benefit of testing Android Market for app developers.

No release date for the new Android Market app, but leaked online versions appeared to download and install. Google has announced plans to introduce an entirely new Android Market app that allows customers to buy books or rent movies from their tablets, smartphones and devices. Android Market has undergone a new review with more Metro UI themes in Windows Phone 7, compared to the previous green and white green.
